Giving Tuesday with SōL West Foundation: nourishing the next generation

Raising real food kids starts here

Every small choice has the power to nourish something bigger.

For Giving Tuesday 2025, Smidge® will donate 5% of every purchase (plus free shipping) to the SōL West Foundation — a nonprofit dedicated to restoring real, ancestral nutrition and building resilient, regenerative food systems for children and young adults.

Because a good meal doesn’t just fill a belly. It can fuel a future.

Why SōL West?

At the heart of SōL West’s work is a deep belief that real food — the kind that’s slow-cooked, nutrient-dense, and lovingly prepared — can transform lives. From teaching kids how to shop for seasonal produce at farmers markets to introducing them to ancestral cooking techniques and hands-on nutrition lessons, SōL West is planting seeds of lifelong wellness. And, cultivating the next generation of food leaders.

In the words of Charles Barth, Executive Director of SōL West Foundation:

SōL West will work to train leaders in the food community who will then go on to serve the most nutritious meals possible, for their entire lifetimes of work. Every good meal served will improve the well-being of our species — and especially our children. This act will replicate hundreds, thousands, or even millions of times into the future... We also encourage joy and laughter as a BIG part of the kitchen culture.

The nonprofit also works to:

  • Provide education and research, through classes, events and online content.

  • Offer expertise and financial support to others engaged in similar nutrition, research, food system and wellbeing activities.

  • Link communities directly with their local and regional food systems.

The project you’ll support today: OurPlate pilot program

This year, your Giving Tuesday order will directly support SōL West’s OurPlate Pilot Program, an initiative designed to demonstrate that public schools can shift, quickly and dramatically, toward better nutrition for our children.

As the U.S. Dietary Guidelines face much-needed updates, this program offers a timely, tangible model: farm-fresh, nutrient-dense meals served in a nature-based school in Topanga, California, where kids are eating well and learning where their food comes from — and how to prepare it with joy and intention.

At Smidge®, we believe in the power of small — small batches, small doses, and small steps that lead to life-changing shifts. Supporting a nonprofit like the SōL West Foundation is a natural extension of our mission: to empower optimal health. Through better sourcing, cleaner ingredients, and now, better meals for our children.

Shop now, and support real food for real kids.
